Denver man accused of killing wife after eating marijuana candy formally charged with murder

Kristine Kirk told a 911 operator that her husband, Richard Kirk, had “taken some marijuana” and was “hallucinating” and frightening their three children. Minutes later Richard shot and killed his wife. Richard was charged with first-degree murder.

According to court records Richard can be heard talking about taking marijuana candy. Kristine asked the police to “please hurry,” and said, “her husband was talking like it was the end of the world…he asked her to get the gun and to shoot him, and she was scared of what he might do because her three children were in the house with her.”

She explained that Richard was taking the gun out of the safe. Shortly afterwards, Kristine can be heard screaming. Then there was a gunshot and the screaming stopped.

Records also show, a receipt was found for “Karma Kandy Orange Ginger,” an edible marijuana candy and a pre-rolled marijuana cigarette. The Karma Kandy package indicated the 10-gram candy contained 101 milligrams of THC. Ten milligrams of THC is considered a serving size.
